Jay Manuel and Pamela Chavez, stars of TLC’s Jay & Pamela, are opening up about the challenges of living with osteogenesis imperfecta type 3, a rare disorder commonly known as brittle bone disease. While this genetic condition, which makes bones fragile and prone to fractures, can be physically and mentally demanding, the couple refuses to view their lives as anything less than fulfilling.
Pamela and Jay, who both live with osteogenesis imperfecta, have endured more than 400 fractures between them and navigate life in motorized wheelchairs. Despite the daily struggles, they maintain a positive outlook, supporting each other through the pain.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the couple shared that chronic pain is a constant challenge, but their bond and open communication help them cope. “We lean on each other, but not too hard,” Jay, 29, jokes. “We really have to rely on each other for emotional support. It helps us get through the tough times.”
Pamela, 32, adds that mental health is a priority in their relationship. “We check in with each other regularly and meet each other where we’re at emotionally,” she explains. “Even if you’re having a rough moment, it’s just a bad day, not a bad life.”

Their journey is being documented on their reality show, Jay & Pamela, where they embrace authenticity. Jay says, “It’s nice to share our tough moments because people can relate, even if they don’t have osteogenesis imperfecta. Everyone has challenging days, and seeing us be so open might help others who are going through their own struggles.”
Pamela emphasizes that living with a disability shouldn’t be something to fear or avoid talking about. “Disability is just part of life, and that’s okay,” she says.
For the couple, being together has been an incredible experience. “It’s a breath of fresh air to share my life not only with my soulmate but with my best friend,” Pamela shares.
The pair, who got engaged in November 2022, are building their lives together, despite their condition sometimes limiting their independence. Jay acknowledges the temptation to feel discouraged, but they remind themselves to enjoy the journey, regardless of its challenges. Fans will also get to witness their big step toward independence as they move out of Jay’s parents’ house and start living on their own.
“Independence looks different for us,” says Jay, adding that the key is to embrace the process and cherish every step of the way. Pamela echoes this sentiment: “I’ve gone from needing help with basic tasks to doing a lot on my own.”
Through Jay & Pamela, they hope to show the world their love, authenticity, and determination, giving a glimpse of their beautiful and unique journey.
Jay & Pamela airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
